History of Janmashtami
Janmashtami, the festival celebrating Lord Krishna’s birth, dates back thousands of years and has its roots in Hindu mythology. According to ancient scriptures, Lord Krishna was born over 5,000 years ago in Mathura, in the Dwapar Yuga, to Vasudeva and Devaki. His birth was destined to end the tyrannical rule of his uncle, King Kansa, who feared a prophecy that Devaki’s child would be his downfall. To protect Krishna from Kansa’s wrath, he was secretly moved to Gokul, where he grew up under the care of Yashoda and Nanda.
Over time, Krishna became known for his divine plays (leelas) and teachings, which are revered in the Bhagavad Gita. Janmashtami has since been celebrated annually by Hindus to honor Krishna’s birth and his contributions to dharma (righteousness). The festival is marked by traditions such as fasting, chanting, and reenacting scenes from Krishna’s life, emphasizing the cultural and spiritual significance of his legacy.
