How to Become a CA without Commerce Background
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) provides an equal opportunity to all individuals interested in pursuing the Chartered Accountancy (CA) qualification. There are no mandatory criteria that students must adhere to in order to start their journey to become a Chartered Accountant.
To begin their journey, students should:
- Have passed the Class X examination.
- Register with the ICAI for the CA Foundation course.
- Complete a study period of four months after appearing for the Class XII examination.
It’s important to note that there is no requirement for a student to have passed the Class XII examination with a commerce background. Students from science, arts, or any other stream can also start their journey to become a Chartered Accountant. Process to Join CA for Non-Commerce Students
Non-commerce students who wish to pursue a Chartered Accountancy course can choose from two entry routes:
1. Foundation Route
- Non-commerce students can start their CA journey by registering for the CA Foundation course.
- They must have passed the class X examination to be eligible.
- After passing the Foundation exam, they can proceed to the Intermediate course.
2. Direct Entry Route
- Non-commerce graduates can opt for the Direct Entry route if they meet the eligibility criteria.
- They must have completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with the required percentage.
- They can directly enroll in the Intermediate course without appearing for the Foundation exam.
CA Foundation Route for Non-Commerce Students
- Register with ICAI: After passing the class X examination, register with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
- Complete Class XII and Study Period: After appearing for the class XII examination, complete a 4-month study period and then appear for the CA Foundation level examination.
- Pass CA Foundation and Class XII: Pass the Foundation examination as well as the class XII examination.
- Register for CA Intermediate: Register for the Intermediate course.
- Appear for CA Intermediate: After completing an 8-month study period, appear for the Intermediate examination.
- Pass CA Intermediate: Pass both groups of the Intermediate examination (2 groups with 3 papers each).
- Complete IT and Soft Skills Course: Complete the Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills before starting practical training.
- Register for CA Final: Register for the Final course.
- Commence Practical Training: Start 2 years of practical training.
- Complete Online Modules: Complete and qualify self-paced online modules.
- Complete Advanced IT and Soft Skills Course: Complete the Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills after practical training but before the CA Final examination.
- Appear for CA Final: After 6 months of completing practical training, appear for the Final examination.
- Pass CA Final: Pass both groups of the Final examination.
- Apply for CA Membership: Apply for membership with the ICAI.

Direct Entry Route for Non-Commerce Students
Eligibility:
- Passed the intermediate level examination of Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) or Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI).
- Commerce graduate or postgraduate with 55% marks.
- Non-commerce graduate or postgraduate with 60% marks.
- Undergraduate or postgraduate who are in the last year of their graduation.
Steps:
- Register for CA Intermediate: Eligible candidates can directly register for the Intermediate course.
- Appear for CA Intermediate: After completing an 8-month study period, appear for the Intermediate examination.
- Pass CA Intermediate: Pass both groups of the Intermediate examination (2 groups with 3 papers each).
- Complete IT and Soft Skills Course: Complete the Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills before commencing practical training.
- Register for CA Final: Register for the Final course.
